What is The GRI Register?

The GRI Register is part of the CorporateRegister.com site, which is a free directory of company issued CSR, Sustainability and Environment reports from around the world.

The GRI Register covers a subset of the thousands of reports featured on CorporateRegister.com by providing access solely to those reports which follow the Global Reporting Initiatives GRI 2002 and G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.

We offer access to the very latest GRI reports as they are published, and provide an archive of reports for each company featured.

Report profiles can display information on the hard copy reports we collect in our own archives and/or provide direct access to the PDF version.

This is a free service for featured companies and site users.

The GRI Register is owned, hosted and managed entirely by CorporateRegister.com Limited. Any updates and modifications to profiles on The GRI Register can be made directly through us, see Sending us reports / Contacting us.

Why the GRI Register?

CorporateRegister.com designed The GRI Register as an online tool for the Global Reporting Initiative to provide information on reports following the GRI guidelines. As a ‘subset’ of the main CorporateRegister.com site we do not ask users to register for access to GRI reporting information as we do on the comprehensive CorporateRegister.com site.

CorporateRegister.com has been tracking GRI reports for several years. You can find all the GRI reports together with thousands more non-GRI reports after free registration on the main site CorporateRegister.com. Registration will also open up a number of other search parameters, access to statistics and much more. The GRI Register has been developed to help users find information as quickly and efficiently as possible. We hope you find this service useful, and would be interested in receiving your feedback.

Which companies and reports feature in The GRI Register?

  1. The GRI Register follows the same general guidelines for inclusion found on the main CorporateRegister.com site, namely:

We aim to include every relevant published corporate report, without limitations of country or company size and across all sectors, public and private. We actively research new reports where they are not provided directly by the reporting company.

We will attempt to contact the companies we feature to request the most up to date information. In the absence of any contact we will maintain a company’s free reporting profile through our independent, periodic research.

We have had to take a view on what types of publications to include on the site. We feature reports and reviews – not brochures, marketing and related publications. We do not feature publications which are sales material, have no reference year, no quantitative data and no statement of policy.

Some of our featured report profiles include sections from annual reports. These sections need to comprise at least 6 pages.

  2. We have taken guidance from the Global Reporting Initiative on which reports can be qualified as ‘GRI’ reports. We recognise the following levels of GRI adherence:

    G3
For a report to be considered aligned to any degree (high or low) with Version 3.0 of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (“G3”), the report maker must self-declare the level to which it has applied the GRI Reporting Framework. This system is known as the “GRI Application Levels” and has three levels: A, B and C. Further details here.

    2002 IA - In Accordance
A report can be considered “In Accordance” with the 2002 version of the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines if it meets 5 criteria, including: a statement from the CEO, a Content Index, and a response (or explanation of omission) to each core indicator. In Accordance status is self-declared by the report maker, and can optionally be checked for accuracy by an auditor or GRI.

    2002 CI - Contents Index
A report maker includes a GRI Content Index to show readers in a quick and easy way where they can find data or responses to each disclosure in the 2002 Guidelines. Sometimes CI’s contain an explanation for why core content is not included in the report as well. The Content Index can be contained in the PDF version of the report and/or the web-based version.

    2002 Ref-only - With reference only
Some reports state that they were developed “with reference to” or “based on” the 2002 Guidelines. Reports in this category do not contain a GRI Content Index or an In Accordance declaration.
NB. 2002 Ref-only reports were only accepted on The GRI Register up to September 2006, and no further 2002 Ref-only reports will be added.

If you have a relevant report that we have missed, please inform us (see Sending us Reports).

Are any reports not included in The GRI Register?

The GRI Register is bound by the same guidelines and research coverage found on the main CorporateRegister.com site:

  1. The site is always expanding as we research or are sent new reports. There will always be reports we miss, which is why we request full participation from reporting companies and stakeholders to help us fill any gaps.

By comparing the occurrence of already profiled to newly identified reports in our daily research cycles we estimate that we track at least 90% of all reporting companies. Please contact us if you have information on new reports.

  2. Our free service extends to hard copy profiles and PDF hosting. We do not provide links to HTML version reports as part of our basic free service.

A major reason we have taken this position is because research of other sites and our own experience has revealed that maintaining a large directory of live URLs (web-links) is very difficult. Whereas PDF reports can be held on our own servers, HTML only reports are solely available on the reporting company’s website and would need to be linked from CorporateRegister.com. These reports can be relocated or simply removed without our knowledge, resulting in broken links from our directory.

However, we offer HTML report links to leading reporters as part of our expanded PriorityReporter package.

  3. We do not profile reports which are only published in non-latin scripts. This is in part due to the technical limitations of displaying non-latin script reports in most PDF viewers and browsers. We also need to be able to interpret the reports we feature in order to populate our report profiles with relevant information.

  4. We do not feature EMAS statements, as this information is available elsewhere. However, if an EMAS statement is expanded to feature an environmental report, and especially if it covers several sites in one document, we will include it.

  5. With specific reference to The GRI Register, we do not include any ‘2002 Ref-only’ reports published or located after September 2006. These reports will however feature on the main CorporateRegister.com site without being associated with The GRI Register.

Sending us reports

If you would like your report or reports included on The GRI Register, please first check to see if your report features on the main CorporateRegister.com site. If already available we may just need to change the ‘status’ of your report to ensure that it features both on the main site and in the The GRI Register.

If we do not feature your report on the main CorporateRegister.com, we will need the following from you:

  1. Copies and types of report

We need four hard copies of all published reports, past and current. By ‘hard copies’ we refer to professionally printed documents, rather than computer print-outs or photocopies. We include all reporting categories featured on the site.

    Electronic Formats:

    PDF Reports:

We host PDFs of featured reports: please help us access these files (by providing a URL, or sending the PDFs on CD or by e-mail). We request permission before hosting PDFs.

    HTML Reports:

We provide direct links to HTML reports for PriorityReporters only. Please contact us if you have an HTML report format and would like it added to your profile.

  2. Contact details

Who should be contacted to obtain copies of your reports? You might want to send us details of several contacts for different countries/languages. We need name, job title, postal address, telephone and fax, e-mail.

  3. Languages

In which languages is your report available? If you publish in several languages, we use the English version, giving details of the others. If your report is unavailable in English we will still include it.

  4. Other organisations

If it is not evident in the report, it would be helpful if you would inform us of the external consultants/designers/printers/third party statement organisations involved in helping develop your report (name of organisation, brief contact details).

  5. Updating

Contact us to update information from your current or earlier reports - for example if some language versions are out of print, or if company details need updating etc.
